Elemental Alchemy: 2012 Block of the Month
Fire. Water. Air. Earth. Ether. Many cultures and traditions (Hindu, Greek, Buddhist) saw these four earthly elements plus the ether or heavens as the basic building blocks or energy cycles for the world. Whether these elements are energy or matter is of course not for us to decide during Block of the Month—but we’ll explore the world around us through this quilt, use a little quilter’s alchemy to turn small pieces of colorful fabric into a whole quilt—and maybe create just a little more balance in our lives as we explore and think about what is around us in nature.

This quilt will stretch the quilter a bit more than our usual block of the month and will incorporate not only traditional piecing, but also appliqué and innovative piecing. At least a small amount of experience with piecing is expected before taking this class.

The colors of the quilt reflect the world around us and the heavens above us: healthy, growing greens and browns for earth, soothing periwinkles and blues for air, tranquil teals, turquoises, and aquas for sky, exuberant reds, magentas, and oranges for fire, and the deep, mysterious dark purples and blues of ether.$48

Supplies: We will provide the fabric for the blocks, along with the instructions, each month. At the end of the year, we will provide a final pattern, and a finishing kit may be purchased. Please be certain that you come to the last class so that you do not miss the details.

We will meet once a month. Choose among the following days and times:
Saturdays, Jan. 21, Feb. 25, Mar. 10, Apr 14, May 12, June 9, July 14, Aug. 11, Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Nov. 10, Dec. 8. At 11:00 a.m.

Mondays, Jan. 23, Feb. 27, Mar 12, Apr. 16, May 14, June 11, July 16, Aug. 13, Sept. 24, Oct. 22, Nov. 12, Dec. 10, 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m.

Pinwheels and Broken Dishes
The half-square triangle is a common quilting unit. Barbara will get you thinking about it a little more--what are the characteristics of a good unit? How do you make it accurately and efficiently? How do you deal with 8-point intersections? We'll use the Easy Angle, and this class will be the end of any frustrations you may have with triangles! Feel free to bring along any quilt you have made using triangles, and as a group, we will diagnose issues and come up with "could haves." Feel free to use your scraps! $38 Supplies: Fabrics –  Two fat quarters to learn how to use the Easy Angle and make these two blocks. However, you are encouraged to consider a project using “scraps”. Sample quilt was made with leftovers from a larger project. 6” x 12” ruler. Jeans/Denim 70/10 needle. A 6-1/2” Easy Angle. 100% cotton thread in a contrasting color, pins (at least 1-3/8” long with .50 mm diameter) Optional:  The Angler
NOTE: THE FIRST DAY OF THIS CLASS HAS CHANGED AND WILL BE SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, FROM 1-4. THE SECOND DAY WILL BE WEDNESDAY, FEB. 1, FROM 6-9 p.m.

Sewing 102: Zippers and Hems
Hemming and inserting zippers are essential skills for sewing and clothing repair. In this hands-on class, the very kind and knowledgeable Janice will walk you through two types of zippers and two types of hems. You’ll learn how to insert a centered and lapped zipper and Janice will demonstrate how to shorten a zipper. You’ll also learn how to do a double-hem and a blind hem. If there’s time, Janice will demonstrate how to make a buttonhole! You’ll leave this class with a very solid background in these skills and feel more confident in your sewing. $28 Supplies: BSS, Me and My Sewing Machine: A Beginner’s Guide book, two 14” zippers that coordinate with fabric, four pieces of fabric 5 ½” x 18”, thread to match fabric, three pieces of fabric 7” x 18”, , 6” seam gauge, hand-sewing needle, one flat button (any size).

Silk Quilt
Is there a more gorgeous fabric than silk? Silk has a depth of color and shimmer that you can’t get anywhere else. Sewing with silk has its tricks, however! It can be delicate and fray easily. So there are questions: What type of thread and needle to use? What about interfacing? Kim will take you through your choice of our silk kits, and by the end, you’ll have gained confidence in working with this special fabric. $25 Supplies: BSS, One of our silk kits.
Monday, May 7, 6-9 p.m.

Sourdough
Barbara has made a series of quilts recently, in a strong determination to eliminate scraps from her life for this new year! In her “sourdough series,” she will show you different ways to use scraps, all the while building new skills. You know that when you make a quilt you end up with bits and pieces. Barbara will show you how to cut them up and then once a year make this wonderful quilt from them. No longer will odds and ends overwhelm your sewing room! And you know that Barbara is not just going to show you how to sew pieces together—she is going to show you how to do it with exquisite execution! $38 Supplies: Twelve 7” squares of fabric. Do NOT color coordinate. The more variety you have, the better the finished product will be. Bring any 1-1/2” or 2-1/2” pre-cut strips. 1/2 yard of solid – must be a strong color— Black is a good choice. Rotary cutter and ruler (6” x 12” is a good choice). 6” square ruler. At least 4 plastic bags or small containers to transport cut pieces. Jeans/Denim 70/10 needle. Aurifil thread. Pins (at least 1-3/8” long with .50 mm diameter). Note taking material. Optional if your machine has a flatbed or portable table: The Angler.
Wednesdays, Feb. 8 & 15, 6-9 p.m.

Sourdough (Flying Sourdough)
In this class we will be using the “sourdough” concept by studying the Flying Goose unit. What makes it tick? What are characteristics of good units? What are best practices for making them? We’ll combine flying geese with the hourglass block, making numerous Flying Geese and Hourglass units using various techniques. We’ll also talk about directional fabrics and how to deal with them for both the flying geese and background. As always, an accurate, consistent ¼” seam allowance is crucial for your success, and Barbara will be sure you have it! $38 Supplies: Although this is a scrappy quilt, there are 3 constant fabrics. These 3 should “play nicely” together. (a) One yard of TWO fabrics with good contrast for Hourglass units. Consider a large scale print for one of the fabrics. Avoid directional fabrics.. (b) Background for Flying Geese units. ONE yard. Avoid directional fabrics..(c) Scraps for “Geese” - a total of approx. ½ yard. Squares must be a minimum of 5-1/4” and strips must be a minimum of 2-1/2” x 5-1/2”. The geese fabric should “play nicely” with at least one of the 3 constant fabrics. Notions: Jeans/Denim #70 needle, 100% cotton thread that will contrast with your fabric choices, 6” x 12” ruler, note taking material, BSS.
Tuesdays, Apr. 3 & 17, 6-9 p.m.

Sourdough (Not Quite Sourdough)
Do you have bits and pieces from one or two large quilts—enough that the scraps are in your way, but not enough to actually make a quilt? Bring them in, and let’s work on them with this class! Barbara will show you how to strip piece 9-patch units. You’ll use the Easy Angle for full or partial snowballs. You’ll look at how to make good intersections, even when a diagonal seam meets a perpendicular one! Barbara always delivers on technique!$38 Supplies: Fabrics – Approx. 2-3/4 yard assorted fabrics for 9 patch blocks and accent fabrics in Snowball blocksApprox. 1 yard for Snowball blocks (I used two different fabrics.) Approx. 1 yard for setting triangles. Please note: This does NOT include yardage for borders. Think LARGE-scale fabric.A 6 x 12 ruler works particularly well, and you will also need a small ruler or square (such as a 1 x 6 ruler). A Jeans/Denim 70/10 needle. Easy Angle – either 4-1/2” or 6-1/2” is acceptable. 100% cotton thread in a contrasting color. Pins (at least 1-3/8” long with .50 mm diameter). Optional: The Angler
Wednesdays, Feb. 22 & 29, 6-9 p.m.

Storm at Sea
The traditional Storm at Sea quilt is an optical illusion—we see curves even though we only sew straight lines. Kim’s researched the best way to piece these tricky blocks. We’ll be using templates to trim up as we sew oversized units, making it so much easier and more accurate. We'll uncover the hidden color and design patterns that lie within the depths of the Storm at Sea. $38 Supplies: BSS, Storm at Sea trimplates, colored pencils, fabric amounts depend on the size quilt you want to make, see Kim or Cynthia. We have put together kits for you if you like the sample Kim made!
Wednesdays, May 2 & 9, 6-9 p.m.

Summer in the Park
Deb’s found another fun strip-pieced quilt that she wants to share. Summer in the Park uses strip-tube piecing to make this fun, summery quilt a breeze! She’ll get you started, and with a little homework, you’ll be finished by the end of the second class! $38 Supplies: BSS, one strip set, 3 yards background fabric, 12 ½” square ruler.
Saturdays, April 7 & 21, 8 a.m. – noon

Tulip Purse
This bag is three things good: Number one, it is totally cute—and who doesn’t want another totally cute bag? Second, its tulip shape is great for holding all sorts of things. And finally, it’s fast, fun, and easy to make! Make any size you desire—small to large! $35 Supplies: Tulip bag pattern, BSS, fabrics and supplies as listed on pattern.
Saturdays, January 21 & 28, 2:30-5:30 p.m.
